When I play as 16-bit Simon and I get a mushroom (chain whip) and I lose it I still get the chain whip! Here is a picture of the bug. Super Mario Bros. Crossover bug.png

The Chain Whip is gained with the Mushroom, as you mentioned, and as such does not have an icon under the character's name. Rather, there would be the mushroom icon to the right (which is also not there, I thought I should mention that small correction).

If you're playing on Easy mode, even after you get hit you'll still retain your mushroom bonuses (unless you're Mario or Luigi) so Mega Man can still charge, SOPHIA still gets the Hyper Beam, Samus still gets the Long Beam, and Simon still gets the Chain Whip.

Fixed that part. Although I think you keep ALL power-ups.

Yes, in Super Easy mode you do.

In Easy Mode you lose your powerups but keep the mushroom bonus.

→ In Easy Mode you get power-ups back when you get back a mushroom.

Yeah, but you keep the bonus from the mushroom until you die. Once you get a mushroom you always have it until you've lost a life.

That was my point anyway, until I just tested it and realized I'm dead wrong. This definitely looks like a glitch.

Since this hasn't been duplicated by anyone else, I think it's safe to assume he was playing on an easier difficulty level, and thus this is likely not a bug.
