HTML5: Is it ready now?

I was poking around through some of the old threads and found one in which Jay was considering porting SMBC to HTML5 and wanted advice on whether it was a good move. In that thread, the consensus was that HTML5 wasn't ready. It was still too early in development, was only supported by Chrome, and didn't run as fast as Flash. So, Jay decided to keep the game in Flash and closed the thread.

That was in 2010. Back then, HTML5 wasn't even considered a "Working Draft" yet.

Quite a bit has changed since then. HTML5 is much more advanced and supported by nearly all browsers (though not Internet Explorer 8). Its use is growing more widespread and replacing Flash -- for example, some of the most recent interactive pages in Homestuck use HTML5 rather than Flash. From what I've heard, even Adobe is considering abandoning Flash in favor of HTML5.

So, what do you think? Is it worth re-opening this discussion?

Flash is a fucking piece of shit. I hope SMBC goes on a new platform one day. HTML5 is a good choice. Love2D would be even better.

The question is. How much SMBC will improve if it used HTML5?

Would the music emulation engine work with HTML 5?

I bet you anything SMBC on HTML5 would make co-op possible. Would you be able to do fullscreen?

This would probably require a full or near-full recode, which I believe is why the Unity port was scrapped, because the priority right now is SRS. Unless they get some new folks on the team dedicated to SMBC development, we probably won't see an SMBC port for a long time.

The flash version is fine in my opinion

Is it wrong to dream a beefed up version?

SRS needs the priority first. Because a better version of SMBC can hurt SRS and I would prefer that we concentrate on SRS first before anything else happens.

Besides I don't always want to promote SMBC because promoting SRS is my top priority when it releases. I have to keep my word.

what is it that makes love2d the best engine ever and its even better than the best engine ever?

60 FPS. I bet my old laptop can run it better then flash. Flash is a ram hog.

Proper fullscreen mode and you can do so much more.

mari0 is a good example of what the love2d engine can do.

[IMG] < The fact that this gif is under my avatar does not mean that I am of any authority or in the ER team. I may be a wiki mod, but there really isn't that much for me to do there any more.

I see no reason why Love would be any better than HTML5.

The Trains demo on the Love website uses 100% of my cpu and doesn't achieve 60 fps.

Unreal 2004 runs at 60 fps on this machine.

It really depends on the game. mari0 runs 60fps on my machine.
