This is a thread dedicated to the possible inclusion of Pac-Man in SMBC.

I believe he deserves a spot because he was the original video game icon, predating even Mario. He has had several Nintendo games where we can draw inspiration for his look and gameplay. I've included my ideas below and want to hear what people think.

    PAC-MAN (NES)
Default sprite, original gameplay and music.

    PAC-LAND (FAMICOM)
Multiple powerups, jumping ability, full body sprite and music based on 80s cartoon.

    PAC-MANIA (NES)
Pseudo 3D sprite, powerups, jumping ability, new and updated music.

    MS. PAC-MAN (GBC)
Pac-Man skin, faster gameplay, original music

    SUPER PAC-MAN (GBC)
Large super sprite, super speed button, ability to eat gates, original music.

    OTHER IDEAS
Butt Bounce (PAC-MAN WORLD games), Hold and spit shells in multiple directions (Unique Mario-inspired ability), Eat bricks (Based on ability to eat gates in SUPER PAC-MAN)

I'm not familiar with the NES port of Pac-Man . . . was it any good?

I think it was a decent port. Pac-Mania is good too.

You can play them on this site:

    www.virtualnes.com

    EDIT:

Here's what I have so far for the powerups.

    Normal: Regular sprite and jump
Mushroom: Larger sprite and super speed button
Fire Flower: Eat bricks and double jump.
    Star: Acts just like Energizer

Originally the Mushroom and Flower was combined but I couldn't think of anything for the Flower powerup.

Also I had a thought. Pac-Man is always in the state of constant movement. You can only change his direction. Should that be included?

    Odd choice of music . . .
Anyway, I'm not really sure how Pac-Man would work in SMBC since in his original game we was completely helpless without a Power Pellet and completely invincible with one.

Pac-man had NES ports but he wasn't a NES icon really. More of a classic arcade icon.

But I would like to play as him. It would be cool to let him roam around the screen as he pleases and be basically god mode. He should be a unlockable character if he'll be all OP and stuff.

Contra and Ninja Gaiden had arcade versions as well, so why not Pac-Man? He can stomp enemies like the others and could eat them with the Star. Plus with a powerup he can eat bricks which would be awesome especially in the underground levels. He would defy gravity as long as there is an edible brick in his path, which would make it similar to his own game.

    Love the videos, BTW. Lol

Since we now know that characters will play more like their original games, I came up with how Pac-Man would work in the game. He would provide unique and challenging gameplay.

His gameplay would be based on his 3 classic games: Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, and Pac-Mania

    1. Like Bill, he would be a one hit kill.
    2. He would always be moving forward. He cannot stop unless he hits some kind of barrier. You can only change his direction.
    3. He cannot stomp anything, except Koopas and Buzzy Beetles. (If you have a better idea, post it)
    4. Like Pac-Mania, he has the ability to jump.
    5. His swimming controls would be identical to Mario.

He would have 3 power ups: Power Pellet, Super Power Pellet, and Speed Pellet

    1. The Power Pellet enables him to eat anything, except Bowser and any kind of fire. When eaten, enemies turn in the opposite way they were moving. It has a time limit.

    2. The Super Power Pellet enables him to be become Super Pac-Man. He grows in size and can pass through enemies and eat bricks. He can move faster by holding down the Super Speed button. While it also has a time limit, he can extend the duration of his super power by eating a regular power pellet.

    3. The Speed Pellet is found in Pac-Mania. It will increase Pac-Man's speed. For the purposes of SMBC, it will be slower than the Super Speed with the Super Power Pellet. It will be automatic and not require holding down the Super Speed button. Eating additional Speed Pellets will not increase the speed. Originally, it also had a time limit, but it may be modified to last until the end of the current level.

    4. The Invincibility Star would combine the effects of the Power Pellet and Super Power Pellet, except he always travels at Super Speed without having to hold down the Super Speed button.

I don't think it would be intersting to have a character which only attacks by swallowing.

Just as interesting as jumping on someone's head.

I'll give my thoughts on this.

    One: Movement

Pac-Man can't jump. He moves in an overhead view, so in Mario's World he would just slide in the ground. We can rotate everything 90 degrees, and then he would be able to move in the air using the same mechanics from the original game. But that's extremely overpowered and also really boring, so we could give him the ability to move like Sophia without a jump, outlining solid objects. But then, holes screw up the logic. Then, we could give him a short jump, but he has no Rush Coil to help with bigger objects. So in the end, we'll have to make him jump as high as Mario, just like Link's jumping issues.

    Second: Enemies

Pac-Man is a specialist in swallowing. I believe it would be fair to give him the same properties as Yoshi's swallowing, where lesser enemies are destroyed and shelled enemies have their shells retrieved. In addition, enemies cannot be stomped. Because the classic Pac-Man has no limbs to do so. You can't just smash a bad guy with your stomach.

    Third: Powerups

He has only two states in his games, and he can only do one thing in all of them: eat. So we have no set of attack moves to choose from. If we don't want him to be a completely plain character, we would have to assign brand new moves which may be seen as cheap inventions. So for power-ups i only see one possible solution so far: every box yields a Pill, and the Pill gives him temporary immunity. Once i made a game where he could 'vomit' pac-dots as a machine gun. That may be worth a thought.

    Fourth: Music

Pac-Man games have no ambience. They just have the stage start theme and that's it. So we would have to choose from other NES games. As shown in the video, Mach Rider seems quite fitting.

    (from the Wiki)
One possible way to implement a more traditional version of the character would for him to control like a stripped down version of Mario from Super Mario World:

    Normal: Original Pac-Man sprites.
He would control just like Small Mario from SMB, complete with running and jumping abilities.

    Mushroom: Pacmania sprites.
Grabbing this would turn him into "Super Pac-Man". He can now grab and hold shells in his mouth like Mario can hold with his hands in SMW. He can spit out the shell left, right or even upward.

    Fireflower: Recolored Pacmania sprites.
This would give him the Spin Jump move like in SMW. Or to be more canonical, he has a move from his 3D games called the Butt Bounce which kills all enemies within a certain radius of where Pac-Man lands.

    Star:
This would act just like the Power Pellet.
He can eat enemies with it.

Actually, Mario-Fan, those were my original ideas. Lol.

Renex, I appreciate your thoughts and you brought up a good point: Music.

Music from multiple Pac-Man games can be used. Examples are Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Pac-Land, and Pac-Mania. There's also Pac-Man 2 for SNES.

Many of the the other points you made I covered in a previous post

Jumping/movement: Pac-Man can jump over ghosts in Pac-Mania. His movement can be adapted with this in mind.
Enemies: You're right, Pac-Man shouldn't be able to stomp. Maybe after eating a power pellet, he cannot eat Koopas or Beetles but can make them go into their shells and "kick" them if he runs into them.
Powerups: I mentioned 3 power ups...the power pellet, super pellet, and speed pellet. All of them have temporary effects. They should last between 5-10 seconds. So there is variety with power ups.

Edit: There's another game called Pac N Pal that has power ups that stuns ghosts. So that can be added too.

From the sounds of all this. Pac-Man doesn't seem interesting or fun to play.

Can you specify why you feel this way? Is it because you don't like Pac-Man games in general?

After researching Pac N Pal, there are 5 powerups that stun enemies.

Galaga ship-Fires beam similar to the Galaga tractor beam.
Snowman-Freezes enemy in block of ice.
    Pac-Man clone- A mini Pac-Man attacks enemy.
    Trumpet-Fires musical notes at enemy.
    Rally-X car-Leaves enemy in smokescreen.

What no. I love the Pac-Man games. He just doesn't seem suited for this game. I saw the videos and I was thinking. That's it?

Well, the videos are pretty lame. They were made as parodies, not to be taken seriously. I've mentioned various powerups from later games that would make it more interesting.

Great idea, dude! I think his sprites should be like Pc-Land, with a few moves based on Pac-Man World (Like the butt-bounce you suggested).
