Time Attack

    This Time Attack challenge uses the in-game timer in order to get a real time score. The way to find the time is n * 0.397, where n is the number of timer ticks it took to complete the level.

    For example, if you finished the level in 55 timer ticks, your real time would be:

    55 * 0.397 = 21.835 seconds (round this to two decimals, so 21.84 seconds)

    It's easy! :D

    • Death ends a Single World or Entire Game run, and you must reload your save file
      • This may seem strict, but a built-in system would likely work the same way
    • For Single World and Entire Game runs, you must keep track of the time it took to complete each level, and then add them all up at the end of your run
    • The timer stops momentarily when you collect a power-up that freezes you in place, when you enter a pipe, and when some characters get hit (e.g., Mario)
    • Bonus areas in levels that skip parts of the level are permitted and encouraged

    I think you mean each time tick is 397/1000 of a second.

    Oh, you're right, that's what it is. Jay gave me 1000/397, which is probably the way he has it set up in his code. I'll change the post, as it will make more sense as N*397/1000. Thanks for pointing that out! :)

    The code probably relies on the number of seconds per time tick, instead of the other way around.

    I fear the math may deter people (it may already have deterred some), so I'm going to simplify it a little bit:

    N * 0.397

    That should be nice and simple. :)

    I just tested so I can give an example to explain details as simply as I can:

    Game info:
    Single character Normal mode
    World 1-1
    :ryu:

    Time:
    Starting in-game time: 400
    Ending in-game: 353
    In-game tile spent: 400 - 353 = 47
    Real time spent: 47 * 0.397 = 18.65918.66 seconds


    Submission:
    :ryu:
    Level: 1-1
    Time: 18.66 seconds
    Difficulty: Normal
    Cheats: None
    Other: No power-up, no attack whatsoever, used warp pipe.


    Note:
    Use [plain] tags when you post a time beginning by a 3.

    Excellent! :D

    It should be noted that 1-2, 2-2, 4-2, and 7-2 all take up 6 seconds for the intro pipe-entering. Since the clock always stops when collecting power-ups and entering/exiting pipes during a level, these 6 seconds shouldn't count towards your total time for the level. So, consider your start time at "294" or "394" or whatever it is for that level.

    • 1-2: 90 ticks (35.73 seconds) Needs work | Picked up Hard Knuckle; tried to hit the first Koopa with a Hard Knuckle, but canceled out the weapon and it disappeared, so then I had to use the buster, which wasted some time; for the rest of the level, I used the charged shot like a baus (seriously, I wish I had recorded it, it was pretty awesome :p)
    • 1-3: 78 ticks (30.97 seconds) Nearly perfect | A couple of ticks might be saved if the floating platforms are done perfectly; picked up Flame Blast
    • 1-4: 80 ticks (31.76 seconds) Very good | Waiting for flame breath is annoying; used Flame Blast against Bowser, he probably could have gone down a little bit faster; bypassing Bowser altogether may also save some time

    If you do a whole world, you can add up the times and label it as "World 2" like I did in the previous post. :)

    You can then also separate your level notes as necessary.

    General note: Slashing the 1st enemy of 3 enemies line is convenient to jump above them. That's where the Sword Extension come up handy. But mastering the Jump Cancel allow to use this trick at its best capacity.
    Level notes:
    • 3-1: Multiple save-reloads, no power-up picked.
    • 3-2: Picked up the Fire Ninpo thing (meteor thing).
    • 3-3: Picked up Sword Extension.
    • 3-4: Got rid of Bowser rather than take the risk to lose all power-ups.

    This is great! :D

    I'm going to play around with it. I've already added an extra column for Mega Man, in case people want to play as him using no sliding/charging (as in the early/modern games). I'll also add rows for each level and each world, and then a final row for the entire game. :)

    General note: It is possible to manipulate luck in the game. If you go on 4-1, for a simple example, according to the way you hit the 1st :?: (assuming you've got the mush), you will get a different power-up.
    Level notes:
    • 4-1: Uses Luck Manipulation to get the Fire Ring Toss at the 1st :?:.
    • 4-3: Multiple save-reloads.
    • 4-4: Realizes how stupid it was to chose the Fire Ring Toss against fire-breathing Bowser, firebar and podoboo. END OF RUN.

    I should probably point out that a run of a world should be done in one go, and if you ever die, the run is over and you have to restart. It's fine to do individual levels, but if you intentionally did them individually, they should count as individual runs.

    Every entry on the chart needs to be done in one go. The chart is going to have:

    Entire game
    World 1
    1-1
    1-2
    1-3
    1-4
    World 2
    2-1
    ...
    World 8
    8-1
    8-2
    8-3
    8-4

    So, there are 41 different time attack challenges (32 levels, 8 worlds, 1 entire game), and then there are several different characters for each challenge.
