Time Attack

My intention was to have the powered up file a fully powered up file, just to make sure everyone who is doing it that way is on the same page. I certainly trust your submission, but in order for this to be up on the powered-up board, I think I'll have to request that it be done again with a fully-powered file. I know it sounds extremely picky, but it's best to make sure the rules are being followed in order to make the boards fair. :)

Also, if it were a computer-run system, it would just give you all the power-ups, so try to think of it that way. :)

I'd advise people to set up multiple save files if they plan to be doing the time attacks. :)

I wish Jay would make a new save file generator...

I just tested it, and the save file can be named whatever you want. So, you could just make different save files for the time attacks. :)

    → Are you serious?
I know I've seen that once but I screwed a save file by renaming it.
I guess that was because I saved it as "name" instead of "name.txt" ...

EDIT: I'd be glad to make a fully powered save file, but the problems are Samus, Simon and Ryu, who have to choose a specific weapon/sub-weapon.

It's a fucking text file, name it whatever you want. It will work.

You just beat Rey D's time on that level. By several seconds. :awesome:

There's a Powered Up file on the Wiki. Bill's got the Flamethrower, Simon's got the Holy Water and Ryu's got the Fireball Ninpo. Can't remember what Samus has. But everyone else has everything they can have, along with 18 lives.
    Code:

I just realized if Time Attacks start to get really competitive, we're going to need a better solution for timing. ~1/3 of a second is a pretty large window, if you think about it.

This is why an in-game real-time counter would be best. Until then, though, using the timer ticks is probably the easiest method we have. I know people could just time themselves, but the timer ticks method just provides a very simple method of keeping track of your time with minimal effort on the part of the player (i.e., just use a calculator rather than making sure you're starting and stopping your timer at the right time). Also, the timer ticks only count down when you're in control, which is an interesting method of timing. I might argue that an in-game real-time counter ought to do the same thing, but if it doesn't that's cool, too.

I've been wondering... Why not basing on the said in-game ticks?

  12. aliceandsven

    aliceandsven Level 9: Spike Top

I guess because people in general are more familiar with seconds/minutes. It means more to say "I can finish this level in xx seconds" rather than "I can finish this level with only so many of these in-game timer ticks left"

I know it says Death ends a run but on world 8 it takes you back to the beginning of the level if you die, so couldn't that be an exception? Just whatever time you had before you died, you could just add that time to the time that you had when you won.

  18. sbq92

    sbq92 Level 9: Spike Top

Hmm... The whole point of the run is to see how quickly you can do it. Even if you use the time you had before you died, you still ultimately failed to do the run as quickly as possible. I do understand your point, but I'd say you have to do it without dying. Don't forget, though, that there is a segmented version of the run, which means you can save each world and attempt them until you finish them.

Now, hopefully there will be a time attack mode added to SMBC at some point. If this happens, it would probably be set up to handle death situations. I know true speed runs do allow deaths, but the time attack which this thread is for is basically intended to be a no-death run.

I encourage everyone to try this challenge! It can be a lot of fun! :D The rules are in the OP.

I've updated the leaderboards so they'll be a lot easier for me to manage regularly (potentially daily, if not more frequently).
